Beyond metadata
Metadata — bless its wordy soul — helps us find things. On the internet, it’s a key part of how we search. We all benefit from the descriptive keywords that websites use to describe what they contain. We go to a search engine, type in words that define our topic of interest, and get results.
What if you could do that same kind of keyword search inside a video? What if, while the video is running, you could keyword search every spoken word in that video? What if you could search the entire video all at once?
You can. It’s here. Available now. And frankly, it’s a revolution in search technology. You probably won’t be surprised to hear that this disruption is driven by IBM Watson AI.
Concept
IBM Watson transcribes all spoken words into a video transcript — and makes the transcript text searchable.
How it works
At the channel level, you decide whether or not to enable Watson’s transcription process. Once enabled, Watson will monitor the channel for new broadcasts or pre-recorded videos. With each added video, Watson engages and transcribes each spoken word.
Transcript editor
The built-in transcript editor lets you review and update Watson’s transcription. Why would you want to edit what Watson AI has produced? It’s entirely possible that Watson may not correctly spell specialized names such as brands or colloquial expressions. The transcript editor allows you to play the video and edit the transcription on the fly.
Player search tool
It all comes together with a search tool on the IBM Video Streaming player… click it, type a search word or phrase… and you’ll see available results. Each search result is clickable, enabling you to navigate to exactly that point in the video.
Use cases
Providing employees or prospective customers with video search can make everyone’s time more efficient.
- An hour-long lunch and learn — quickly find what you want
- A 20-minute how-to video — quickly find what you want
- A town-hall broadcast — quickly find what you want
- A product launch — quickly find what you want
Find what you want in videos… and put more time back in your day.
