IBM Watson® and TED®: Part four of four

AI-infused video and streaming capabilities designed for your business

Series recap

In the prior parts of this series, we’ve looked at:

Part One – What is AI-infused video?
Part Two – An example of interacting with AI-infused video
Part Three – The techniques IBM’s Watson uses to enrich video

Now, in Part Four, we’ll look at some case studies that turn technology into benefits for your business.

Why is video so dominant (consuming the majority of web traffic)?

According to Psychology Today (2015-05), our brains process video 60,000 times faster than text. Since we’re hardwired to avoid cognitive strain, we’d rather watch than read in most cases.

IBM Cloud Video products

These key words truly capture many of the business benefits: Intelligent – Secure – Scalable – Flexible. Under the IBM Cloud Video brand, there are actually separate product solutions and if you have questions or would like a demonstration, contact me directly.

  • Streaming Manager – taking your brand message by broadcast or VOD outside to the internet. You control your message, you set up channels, you control the selection of videos that your audiences see.
  • Streaming Manager for Enterprise – use secure integration with your Single-Sign-On (SSO) corporate authentication. Use IBM’s cloud content delivery network to help with network storage and traffic. Video files are big – and they just keep getting bigger as resolutions increase in size. IBM’s security for business also includes robust data encryption systems, geo-fencing and more.
  • Enterprise Content Delivery Network (eCDN) – this is a “bandwidth-managing companion” to Streaming Manager for Enterprise. It helps ensure that your corporate video users stream through a single point through the firewall to the cloud server.
  • Live ad – placement of banner advertising that draws people directly into broadcasts

Human Resources – Case Study #1

Elaine is a Chief HR Officer for a large enterprise, where she drives HR strategy for her organization in all areas of the human capital management lifecycle, from talent attraction and acquisition, to leadership succession planning and organizational learning. Elaine’s team has just had a meeting in which they discussed the new provincial “healthy workplace” legislation that will come into effect in six months. The company has been using videos and video segments in organizational learning for the last twenty years. With the increasing spotlight shining on respectful interpersonal behaviour, Elaine and her team realize they have a daunting task. They have more than 250 full videos and short clips, plus associated learning documents to review for compliance. IBM Cloud Video and Watson Video Enrichment offer two important solutions to speed up technical reviews of existing video content:

  • Speech to text (transcriptions)
  • Scene detection

“When people are viewing on-demand online videos, they spend an average of two to three minutes viewing content. But when watching a live event…

You know the cost of creating a multi-point campaign to capture prospective consumers for a few seconds here, 30 seconds there. Now consider…

…viewing increases up to 20 minutes. This is an incredible amount of time for engagement.”

Marketing – Case Study #2

Jessica is a Chief Marketing Officer (CMO). For most Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs) like Jessica, the marketing discipline has radically changed with the rise of the connected consumer. Jessica recognizes that today’s consumers are more connected, more knowledgeable and consume more information than ever before. She understands that we now live in a data-driven world that’s changing the very nature of the marketing profession—so much so that some may even question if we should continue to call the discipline “marketing” or something like “customer engagement.”

From their customer research, Jessica knows that video is the one medium of engagement that continually stands out. Jessica is looking for a way to stand out – to create a space where her company can completely control brand messaging – and lead customers through a funnel. IBM Cloud Video offers key solutions through Streaming Manager:

  • Internet-facing channels – where her team can define interest groups and segment videos by channel.
  • Player branding through API – completely control brand
  • Customer Q&A or customer chat options – encourage social interaction with their branded content
  • Built-in registration even gateway that builds a data profile of usage in the background. (The marketing team will be able to pinpoint trends in video use… looking at when prospects become customers convert after viewing videos.)
  • Companies can leverage videos in multiple directions – using the Cloud Video channel platform, plus being able to embed directly into websites… corporate video libraries… and even in eLearning courses. Single-source cloud streaming makes it possible.

Information Technology – Case Study #3

As CIO, Margaret oversees the entire IT organization. As technology’s impact on the business has increased, her role has evolved from being a technical infrastructure expert to being expected to act as a strategic leader responsible for delivering business value. The pressures from her CEO to help meet earnings targets, successfully launch mission-critical enterprise initiatives are continual. The emergence of cloud-based applications offers a new opportunity to simplify and streamline IT operations. Increasingly, her network support team has been flagging video traffic on the network as a cause for concern. IBM Cloud Video offers a multi-point solution that could solve a critical need:

  • eCDN can focus and limit internet bandwidth consumption by routing all usage of corporate videos to a single point
  • IBM Cloud Video can be both the storage and load-balancing delivery hub
  • IBM Cloud Video’s background data and analytics can help them understand video usage across their national office network
  • IBM Cloud Video scales up as demand rises, relieving the pressure on internal IT

Summary
